Collaborative project with Anu Penttinen

The Wonder Project launches its first study in Derenburg, Germany in February 2022. This process and hotshop session was to document personal journeys in glass, journeys that initially present a problem, something that is unclear, complicated yet interesting and inspiring. The project is not to find absolute truths or final solutions. It is more about documenting the journey. The Derenburg Session was an exploration with the glass material, but also within two people with separate artistic expressions, aesthetics and working modes. It was a test for its participants on how to navigate ideas, opinions, aspirations and expectations, and on how to come to a conclusion. We were open to share insecurities and normally unspoken processes of possible doubt and uncertainty of a new work mode. We shared discussions and made the process transparent.

Anatomy of a Knot

We explored different ways of making a physical piece that resembles a knot-like shape; hot glass techniques, colours, different glass materials, surface textures. The Derenburg Session concentrated on the hot glass processes, other techniques will follow and be documented as will be the discussions and progression of the project.

Evolution of a Knot

The “knot” will present our problem of finding new and unexplored ways of working together within an artistic process. The result is a collection, or an evolution of different knots, or in fact problems, dilemmas, discussions, compromises unravelling and resolving. Or not resolving. These strange times seem to add a wind-factor to everything we do, nothing is as simple as before. Tasks, even simple ones, present themselves as more difficult and complex than they should be. As we, REMES&PENTTINEN, are struggling to re-discover ourselves as artists and makers, we decided to use a straightforward metaphor like the knot to also depict the complexity of finding words, a common ground, to dare let personal artistic process for evaluation.
